The end result - Costa Rica #27

Yummm. I'm skipping past the other tour photos because I don't think there's anything wonderful to share and I don't want my CR photos to drag on, forever. But, here you see my 17-year-old stirring his coffee. He does NOT like coffee, so he put in lots of milk and about 6 spoonfuls of sugar, but he drank it!

Our tour guide said Costa Ricans like their coffee weak. They use an interesting little contraption that looks like a sock (made of undyed flannel) to strain the coffee. No fancy coffee-maker necessary! Then, they pour in plenty of milk and sugar. Basically, Costa Ricans are like my kid -- watered down and sugary is their thing. They gave us little cups of rice pudding to eat with our coffee while we waited for our ride back to the hotel. The tour was extremely fun and I highly recommend a coffee plantation tour if you're ever in Costa Rica.

great shot yumm to the rice pudding but I'm with your son on the coffee I think he did very well I couldn't have drunk it at all

@jamesy: I tend to water mine down a bit, too, with plenty of sugar and cream. the coffee was great - delicate and sweet. :)

@Lorraine: I like it strong, too, which is funny because I used to think coffee was disgusting and drank that chocolaty fake coffee stuff. I'm over that, now. LOL I still require sugar, though! :)

The coffee sounds disgusting. Espresso, Cortado, maybe Cappuccino, unsweetened is the only way to go,

@grouser: I don't fault you for your opinion because I've only recently become a coffee lover. Maybe there was a sudden uprising on my tongue and half my taste-buds were killed. That's the only reason I can think of for such a sudden change of heart.

Re yesterday I have found alcohol works as an excellent replacement for sugary drinks. You get the sugar in a much more uplifting format.

@grouser: Oh, hmm, unfortunately I don't drink alcohol. Sometimes I wish I did, but I never developed the taste. Perhaps if there's a second revolt . . . I do like sugar, though.

Don Juan Coffee Tour? :-))

@Earnest: Yeah, pretty funny, isn't it? That was just a very small coffee plantation that we visted -- so small that they can't yet afford to pay "fair trade" wages, although the tour guide said the workers are provided housing, food and insurance so they are able to take the full amount of their wages home (they import migrant workers, just like we do, for the crap jobs). Oddly, the person who most resembled the Don Juan image on that cup was the guy who is in charge of the mules.

Hmm, I prefer very strong coffee, so I'm sure I'd have to follow Grouser's recommendation and add something... maybe Kahlua and brandy (to make a Keoki Coffe).

@Lesley: I like my coffee strong, now, too. Weird. Just two years ago, Simon told me the Greeks like their coffee very strong and so does he . . . and I remember thinking, "Not I!" But, now I love strong coffee (with sugar; still have to have my sugar). See my note to Grouser about alcohol.
